New Web Postings Regarding the Outpatient PPS

HCFA is pleased to announce that some important new material is available on its web site regarding the new Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS). As some subscribers may know, the training manuals used by HCFA's fiscal intermediaries to train providers on the OPPS are on HCFA's web site. With considerable assistance from some of the major provider associations, these training manuals have been updated to correct some errors and the revised manuals have been placed on HCFA's OPPS web site. Included for each chapter of the manuals is a brief summary of the changes. This will allow those who already have the manuals to review the changed pages only, if they desire.

While HCFA staff and association reviewers have spent considerable time and effort on this update process, we still remind users of the training manual that it is meant only as a guide to facilitate training. Those impacted by the OPPS are advised to rely on the final rule and the implementing instructions for the OPPS (PM-A-0036) and the Outpatient Code Editor (PM-A-0035) for official policy and instructions for the OPPS. The final rule and instructions are also available via www.hcfa.gov.

In addition to the training manuals, HCFA has also placed the PRICER logic on the web. The PRICER logic will show how HCFA will price claims/services grouped by the Outpatient Code Editor under the OPPS.

To view the training manuals or the PRICER logic,  please take the following steps:

  1. Go to www.hcfa.gov/medlearn/refguide.htm

  2. Scroll down to Outpatient Prospective Payment System Training Session.

  3. Look for the table of contents for the training manuals in this section and click on the chapters you want.

  4. Scrolling just beyond the training manual contents, you can find the PRICER logic.

NOTE: The PRICER logic is quite technical in nature.

Thanks for your interest in the OPPS and we hope you will find these materials helpful.
