  • HCFA Delays Start of APC System

The Health Care Financing Administration has delayed the start of the
Ambulatory Payment Classification prospective payment system for Medicare
reimbursement until August 1. The APC system for hospital outpatient services
was scheduled to take effect on July 1. HCFA Administrator Nancy-Ann DeParle
says that informal surveys of the hospital community indicated that a
"significant number" were not ready to implement the APC system. The new
coding system goes into effect for other, non-hospital health care
organizations later this year and next.
