Welcome to the Rx2000 Institute!

The Institute's web presence is focused on creating an online healthcare learning community that forms naturally around stimulating and relevant best practices; where members can easily tap into collective wisdom and where successful experiences and outcomes are captured and instantly shared.

Finding unbiased information about the business of healthcare in the new century.  From its founding in 1996, the Institute's mission has always focused on healthcare’s business and patient care concerns. Given the potential threat Y2K posed to patient care and practice continuity, the Institute directed much of its earlier efforts to keeping the industry informed about Year 2000 concerns. Its efforts earned it significant respect from the healthcare community and government for being one of the key providers of critical, unbiased and up to the minute information.

Moving beyond Y2K
We now look forward to concentrating our efforts on issues many believe will have an even greater impact on the healthcare community than the Year 2000 changeover. These include evolving federal regulations such as HIPAA and new eHealth and IT initiatives.

HIPAA, eHealth and rapid change
Most healthcare organizations are able to absorb a modest number of technical or organizational changes. Many, however, are not prepared to manage several major challenges at once. For example, new HIPAA regulations and increasing competitive pressures brought about by eHealth technologies are demanding new technology investments at the same time BBA implementation is cutting cash flow. This is happening even as the healthcare delivery system in many communities is being reduced in size.

The growth of the worldwide web is fueling these changes
Healthcare professionals are beginning to increase their use of the Internet and most are wondering how it will eventually affect the industry. What will it mean for consumer empowerment? How will it fit into existing practice management systems? What about information security? Privacy? Will it cost money or save money? Brochures arrive in the mail every day trumpeting this and that electronic solution. Email boxes are filled with offers to "click here and participate in a "free" webcast.

Whom do you trust? What’s critical and what’s window dressing? What’s really required by the new regulations? What are others doing about this? Institute staff are seeking answers to these and many other questions and Institute members are benefiting from what we’re learning.

Healthcare faces unique challenges because it is diverse and fragmented and consists of a relatively few larger players and many, many smaller providers and practices. The future, however, is clear. All organizations in healthcare, regardless of size, fiscal capacity or technological sophistication, will be deeply affected by this new information technology environment. To this end, the Rx2000 Institute makes the following commitment to help you meet these changing needs.

Our commitment
We are committed to:

- maintaining an independent, neutral, member supported information clearinghouse
- building a set of services that will help healthcare organizations manage these new demands while maintaining the highest levels of patient care.

We intend this web site and our services will evolve over the coming months. Please let us know what more we can do to be of greater service to the healthcare community.

What is the mission of the Rx2000 Institute?

Multiple business and technology issues are seriously challenging healthcare. Patient care may be affected by increasing government efforts to regulate how care is monitored, recorded and delivered. As a provider of mission-critical information and training to the healthcare community, the Rx2000 Institute’s mission is to help its members cooperatively address these industry-wide regulatory, technology and information delivery issues.

When and why was the Institute organized?

The Institute was created in 1996 and formally organized as an independent nonprofit organization in early 1997. This was done after Institute management determined there was a need for a neutral independent organization that could address healthcare’s critical Y2K risks. During and after the Y2K crisis, Institute researchers continued extensive research into the impact regulatory and technology challenges could have on the healthcare industry. They determined that improperly implementing change could threaten a healthcare organization’s ability to deliver quality healthcare.
